What is Sorrento?
Sorrento sits at Ball and Moody on the Italian-named streets: Trevi, Portofino, Amalfi, Tivoli, Sorrento Drive. It is four neighborhoods: the Classic, the Collection, the Collage, and the Gallery. Cypress Homes, a Fieldstone company, developed it as a neighborhood of 671 homes over four to five years, with the Cypress Classics and the Cypress Collection designed by Berkus Group Architects. Phase One opened for sale in January 1991. Sales were by drawing at each phase; the interest list passed 1,200 names in spring 1990 and 2,000 by that fall. Cypress Homes also built Veterans Park, 6.3 acres, as part of the project.
The land before Sorrento
The site was a Texaco oil storage facility built in 1928, with 54 steel tanks, each about 40 feet tall and 145 feet across. Crude oil from Huntington Beach and other county fields was stored there until the early 1960s, and Southern California Edison leased 40 of the tanks for fuel oil until the summer of 1987. When Cypress Homes proposed 885 homes on the site that year, more than 300 people came to a special city meeting at the Community Center to object to the density, the traffic, and the contaminated soil. The plan came back at 759 homes in 1988, and the cleanup removed at least 36,000 cubic yards of oil-soaked soil and seven miles of pipeline before anything was built. The final count was 671.
